Timing is the whole job. A lawn overseeding service near Fairfax, VA has a short season to work in, and the dates are not flexible.

Seed needs warm soil and cooling air at the same time, which in Northern Virginia means August through the start of October. Outside that window, the same seed, equipment, and crew produce a noticeably weaker lawn, and no amount of extra watering closes the gap.
